Marco Melandri will be at the opening round of the MotoGP Championship in Qatar after the Kawasaki team completed a deal with the organisers Dorna, allowing them to compete in the series.
A statement from the company read;
“This decision was made after negotiations that followed Kawasaki’s January 2009 announcement to suspend it’s factory supported MotoGP activities due to the economic crisis. Rider for the new MotoGP team will be the Italian Marco Melandri.”
It’s believed that the team decided on a one-man team rather than face a possible potential fine of £20m from Dorna for breach of contract.
This still leaves John Hopkins without a ride for the season although there are rumours circulating that he could be about to join the Stiggy Honda WSB series.
