On his home track, Dani Pedrosa took the chequered flag after dominating the race from the start at the Jerez circuit.
The young Spaniard soon managed to build a 3 second gap between him and the rest of the pack but his pit-board told him he only had a 1.1 second lead, tactics perhaps to keep his mind on the job ahead. However, Pedrosa won with a 2.8 second lead on second place man Valentino Rossi on the Fiat Yamaha.
In third place, another Spaniard, Jorge Lorenz, who tailed his team mate once he’d past for the rest of the race. These three only had one other real contender for a while, Nicky Hayden but he eventually dropped back. Rossi nearly handed his team mate second place after celebrating his second place a lap too early.
Andrea Dovizioso reached fifth place on his JiR Scot Honda, with only a few laps to go but then ran wide on the final corner and was passed by Loris Capirossi on the Rizla Suzuki, James Toseland on the Tech 3 Yamaha and John Hopkin’s on the Kawasaki.
Stoner had a disastrous day on his Ducati Marlboro after getting up to third on the first lap from seventh on the grid. He then took a trip through the gravel and ended up in last place only to repeat the same actions while battling for tenth place with Nakano and Vermeulen with only four laps to go.
Colin Edwards who qualified in third place on the grid, retired from the race on lap six after taking a trip through the gravel and rejoining the track.

Mika Kallio inherited the win at the Jerez circuit on the last lap of the Grand Prix after the two front riders got in a tangle. Kallio started the last lap of the race, eight seconds behind Alvaro Bautista on the Aprilia and Marco Simoncelli on the Gilera. On lap nineteen Bautista and Simoncelli had already exchanged places four times and then twice more during the race. However, on the last lap Simoncelli crashed into Bautista and the two slid of the track into the gravel, where they were seen hugging each other. Bautista apparently apologised to Simoncelli who said “In that quick left-hander he had a problem, when he got on the throttle his engine broke down. I was close to him and couldn’t do anything about it. I tried to avoid him, but there was nothing I could do.
Pasini nipped-in to take the second place spot ahead of Takahashi on the finish line. In fourth was the KTM rider, Hiroshi Aoyama ahead of the two Aprilia riders Hector Barbera and Alex Debon.
