Valentino Rossi on the Fiat Yamaha, secured another win yesterday at the US MotoGP at Leguna Seca ahead of Casey Stoner on the Ducati Marlboro.
A fantastic race developed between the two riders as they opened up a gap from the rest of the pack and swapped leads several times until with eight lap to go, Stoner ran wide.
Stoner struggled to keep his bike on the track but just slipped into the gravel and went down. He was quickly back on his bike and kept second place as the gap had increased between the other riders to almost 22 seconds.
The two riders didn’t exactly agree on the outcome and were heard on the live coverage, as they went to shake hands, saying,
Rossi “Great race” Stoner “No, you can’t race this way.” Rossi “That’s racing, Casey.” Stoner “That’s racing? OK, we’ll see.” more to follow!
Now I really like Stoner, he is a fantastic rider, but he’s also a right whinger! He’s seems to think he owns the track and that riders should make way for him. It was a great race and Rossi proved to be the better rider on that occasion, that is, as Rossi said, racing.
In third place was the Rizla Suzuki rider, Chris Vermeulen, followed by Andrea Dovizioso on the Honda Scot and Nicky Hayden in fifth for the Honda HRC team.
Marco Melandri on the Ducati slid off the track while in ninth place and ended in sixteenth and Anthony West on the Kawasaki also took a trip through the gravel to finish in seventeenth place.
Melandri claims to have hit a marker going into the turn, and took a blow to the hand, he said, it took him a couple of laps to get back into the race because of the pain.
Another disastorous day for Jorge Lorenzo on the Yamaha, after yet another huge high-side saw him catapaulted over his handlbars, resulting in fractures to the third and fifth metatarsals in his left foot.
It is an added injury to the many already suffered by the young Spaniard raising possibilities that he may not be fit to race at the next round of the Championship in Brno on August 15.
