The Fiat Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo, is contracted with the team until the end of the season, but will he remain alongside Valentino Rossi, who is contracted until 2010 or will he be snapped-up by one of the other manufacturers, all who have supposedly offered him a new deal.
Although Yamaha have allegedly offered Lorenzo a new two-year-contract, it is reported that he is unhappy with the financial deal and feels that he is worth more than the salary being offered, claimed to be a quarter of what team-mate Rossi is being paid.
The Spaniard has made it clear that his team of choice would be Yamaha and said in an interview;
It’s not a question of money, it’s a question of do Yamaha want me or does another brand want me more, I think Yamaha want me to stay but I don’t know how much they want me.”
Lorenzo added;
“When you get results and are at the front, everybody wants you, especially when you finish your contract this year. I have had offers from all the brands. I can’t tell you the points why I don’t agree with Yamaha but it continues to be the first option. I know Yamaha is a great machine but it’s very complicated.
“I want to stay at Yamaha – it’s about more than respect, it’s a question of being wanted. Yamaha has two very talented riders – maybe they don’t have the potential to offer to the two riders the same.”
If Lorenzo decides not to take the Yamaha contract, the other likely manufacturer is Honda, however, it’s widely known that Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa are not the best of pals, going back to their 250cc days of 2005.
Rossi is rumoured to be retiring at the end of next season and the fans will be looking for a new hero to follow, is that likely to be Lorenzo, I have my doubts. Rossi has that fun personality as well as being one of the world’s best ever MotoGP riders that endear the crowd to him, Lorenzo has a lot to learn and should maybe concentrate on that rather than what he thinks he’s worth after just two seasons!
There’s no denying Lorenzo is a great rider and has the potential to be the World Champion but put him on another bike that has not been set-up by the world’s best how good would he be?

You don’t have to worry about the next Yamaha #1 after Rossi leaves. Ben Spies will hopefully be on MotoGP Team Yamaha by then.
